A formal deal has been completed between IBM and Francisco Partners
Francisco Partners is one of the most active and long-standing investors in the technology industry, having made over 400 investments since its inception more than 20 years ago. The Weather Company is one of the top 10 most trusted brands in the United States1 because to the reliability of the weather information it delivers to consumers and companies.
A formal deal has been completed between IBM and Francisco Partners, a major global investment firm that specialises in collaborating with technology enterprises, for the latter to buy IBM’s assets related to The Weather Company. In order to help clients organise, measure, report, and operationalize ESG data to support decision making, improve performance, and fulfil regulatory requirements, IBM will keep its sustainability software business, which includes its Environmental Intelligence Suite (EIS).

In addition, The Weather Company will provide Francisco Partners with access to their scientific and technological platform for weather prediction.
Across a wide range of climate-related use cases, IBM plans to keep relying on meteorological data from The meteorological Company for EIS. IBM’s watsonx AI and data platform uses a geographic core AI model fed by NASA’s satellite dataset. This model can be used for a variety of purposes, such as monitoring the effects of natural disasters or estimating crop yields from satellite imagery.
The Weather Company’s consumer-facing digital offerings, The Weather Channel’s mobile and cloud-based digital properties like Weather.com, Weather Underground, and Storm Radar, and The Weather Company’s enterprise offerings for broadcast, media, aviation, advertising technology, and data solutions for other emerging industries are all part of the portfolio that Francisco Partners is purchasing from The Weather Company. With the aid of Francisco Partners, The Weather Company plans to expand beyond traditional weather forecasting to offer new features and services that will help customers better comprehend the far-reaching effects of weather on their lives, beginning with their physical health.
