Fintech upstart PhonePe has unveiled Point-of-Sale (PoS) devices that allow businesses to take payments through debit cards, credit cards, and UPI a month after launching its payment gateway and lending services. The market is controlled by companies like Pine Labs, BharatPe, Mswipe, and Ezetap, among others, in addition to competitor Paytm, which claims to have 79 lakh paid merchant subscriptions for their devices (soundbox and PoS).
The Bengaluru-based fintech company plans to deploy 1,50,000 devices by the end of next year, serving 35 million retailers. According to a statement from the firm, the gadget has the PhonePe PoS software installed and allows tap, swipe, dip, and interoperable QR code transactions. According to Vivek Lohcheb, Head of the Offline company at PhonePe, merchants can anticipate an increase in their average ticket size by accepting credit and debit transactions, ultimately driving overall business growth. Although the new product’s actual cost is yet unclear, PhonePe said it is available for a nominal monthly rental. The Walmart-backed company also debuted a domestic PoS calculator using Bluetooth technology in 2017. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary PhonePe Technology Services Pvt Ltd (PTSPL), PhonePe recently launched its account aggregator (AA) services, enabling its Indian customers to authorize and share all of their financial data, including bank statements, with licensed financial institutions.
