Kompli-Investigate Case Study: Hairdresser Supplies Company

A real-life example of Kompli-Investigate™ in action occurred recently with a supposed standalone
hairdresser supplies business. Its registration checked out with Companies House and on the face of
it looked fine to do business with. However, Kompli-Investigate™ successfully linked it to a number
of other companies where directors had red flags against their names and further investigation
uncovered a treasure trove of intel and a pattern of doing business that would cause an analyst to
be very concerned and seriously question the legitimacy of this organisation.

Some of the red flags raised when investigating this company and its officers, included:
• The percentage of shares owned by this companies’ active PSCs (Person with Significant
Control) did not add up to 100%
• The company had no Internet or Social profiles
• The company wasn’t on the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) Data Protection
Register
• The company was not VAT registered
• There were 8 late notifications of officer appointment or resignations
• There was one late filing of corporate accounts
• The company had 4 non-UK national directors
• Its registered office address was a mailbox/forwarding address

Any of these red flags in isolation might be easily explainable by the company or one of its officers
but when presented together by Kompli-Investigate™, it should certainly cause an analyst to take a
closer look at who they are doing business with.

It is important to note that a highly experienced investigator, if they had had checked through all the
filings at Companies House, the VAT database, ICO and the address would (or should) have found
the same. However, Kompli-Investigate completes this in under 90 seconds.
