Nymeo Federal Credit Union has a mission to end hunger, specifically childhood hunger. For the past six years, the credit union has been underwriting a special program developed with the Maryland Food Bank’s School Pantry Program called $wipe Out Hunger. This past fiscal year, Nymeo’s support has provided approximately 70,350 meals in the form of groceries to children and families in Frederick County, including fresh produce and meat.

“Our $wipe Out Hunger program is unique. When our members swipe their Nymeo debit cards, they help to feed families in our community,” said Nymeo President and CEO Victoria Johnston. “With each swipe, our credit union then donates ½ cent to the Frederick County Food Bank’s School Pantry Program every month. We are proud to announce that this year, we’ve contributed over $11,500.”

Nearly 1 in 4 Marylanders face food insecurity, and over 200,000 are children. With the onset of COVID-19, food insecurity is increasing, and the need is greater than ever.
“At the Maryland Food bank, we believe that how we address child hunger today will determine the health of our community’s decades from now. But we can’t do this work alone,” said Megan Davis, Maryland Food Bank Grants Manager. “With Nymeo by our side, we’ll be able to continue to develop innovative solutions to do more for Maryland’s hungry children.”

During the past fiscal year, Maryland Food Bank distributed more than 84,400 pounds of staple groceries to 10 School Pantry Sites in Frederick County, equating to 1 meal per 1.2 pounds. The schools that Nymeo supported through the program includes Ballenger Creek Elementary, Catoctin High School, Crestwood Middle, Emmitsburg Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, North Frederick Elementary, Thurmont Middle, Wavery Elementary, and Whittier Elementary.

Aside from creating and managing the $wipe Out Hunger program, Nymeo staff receives paid time to volunteer monthly in the community, including disseminating items at the food pantry locations. Nymeo recently created and promoted an online food drive, encouraging members and the community to support efforts virtually this year and raised over $2000 for the Food Bank.
